Everyone starts with no credit history. The problem only becomes visible the first time you apply for a credit card or a loan and the lender has nothing to judge you on. A blank file is not a black mark. It is a gap, and filling it takes a few months of small, boring, on-time payments.
What NH and -1 mean on a credit report
India has four credit bureaus, TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark, and scores run from 300 to 900. If a bureau has no credit accounts on record for you, or none recent enough to score, your report shows NH, for no history, or a score of -1. Lenders read this as unknown rather than risky, but unknown still means many will decline or offer a small limit.
The fastest ways to start a credit history
| Option | How it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Secured credit card | Backed by a fixed deposit, with a limit that is usually a large share of the FD | Annual fees, and the FD stays locked while the card is open |
| An entry-level card from your salary bank | Banks often pre-approve customers whose salary they already see | Joining and annual fees |
| A small consumer durable loan | A phone or appliance on EMI is reported to the bureaus | Processing fees, and never buy something only to build credit |
How to use your first card so it builds a score
- Use a small part of the limit. Balances well under a third of the limit look better than a maxed-out card.
- Pay the full statement balance by the due date, every month. Never pay just the minimum. The minimum payment trap shows why.
- Set up autopay for the full amount, so one forgotten date does not become a late payment on your record.
- Keep the card open once your score builds. Your oldest account anchors the length of your history.
How long it takes to get a credit score
Most people see a score within about six months of their first account being reported. A strong score, the kind that gets you unsecured cards and competitive loan rates, usually takes a year or more of clean history.
What to do next
- Check your report with all four bureaus to confirm where you stand.
- If it shows NH, open a secured card against a small FD.
