The gap between what people expect from YouTube and what it pays is wider in India than almost anywhere, because global RPM figures circulate freely while Indian rates are a fraction of them. Starting with the real numbers avoids two years of disappointment.

What Indian views are actually worth

NicheRough ₹ per 1,000 views100,000 monthly views is about
Finance, insurance, investing₹100 to ₹150₹10,000 to ₹15,000
Tech and software reviews₹80 to ₹130₹8,000 to ₹13,000
Education and exam prep₹60 to ₹100₹6,000 to ₹10,000
Vlogs and lifestyle₹40 to ₹70₹4,000 to ₹7,000
Entertainment and comedy₹30 to ₹60₹3,000 to ₹6,000
Shorts, any niche₹5 to ₹15₹500 to ₹1,500

The Shorts row is the one that surprises people. Shorts are excellent for growth and poor for ad revenue, paying roughly a tenth of long-form per view. The sound strategy is to use Shorts to build the audience and long-form or sponsorships to earn from it.

Where the money actually comes from

  • Sponsorships. On a channel with 50,000 engaged Indian subscribers, a brand integration typically pays ₹15,000 to ₹60,000, which usually exceeds a full month of ad revenue from a single video.
  • Affiliate income. Recommending products you genuinely use, disclosed clearly, often out-earns ads on finance and tech channels.
  • Your own product or service. Courses, consulting, templates. The highest margin and the least dependent on the algorithm.
  • Ad revenue. Real, reliable, and usually the smallest of the four on a serious channel.

Frequently asked

On ad revenue alone, roughly 700,000 to 2.5 million monthly views depending on niche, which is a large channel. Most Indian creators reach ₹1 lakh a month well before that through sponsorships, affiliate income and their own products, typically with 50,000 to 200,000 engaged subscribers rather than on view count alone.

What to do next

  1. Pick a niche you can publish in for eighteen months, then check its RPM band above.
  2. Plan Shorts for reach and long-form for revenue, rather than expecting Shorts to pay.
  3. Build towards sponsorship and your own product, since ads will be your smallest stream.
