You can now pull EPF money out through UPI
Up to 75 percent of your balance is withdrawable via UPI or an ATM card, without the claim process that used to take weeks.

What this means for you
If you have a real emergency, your EPF is now reachable in a way it was not before, and that is worth knowing. If you do not, the easier access is a risk rather than a feature. Money you take out at 30 costs you many times as much by 60, so use it the way you would use an emergency fund, not a savings account.
See what that withdrawal costs by 60Opens with these numbers already filled in. Change any of them to match your own.
EPFO has opened UPI and ATM based withdrawal for up to 75 percent of the total balance, employee share, employer share and accrued interest included. The older route ran through an online claim, employer attestation in some cases, and a wait measured in weeks.
Faster access to your own money is straightforwardly good, and it removes a genuine hardship: people who needed their PF in an emergency previously borrowed at card rates while the claim sat in a queue.
It also removes the friction that was quietly doing useful work. EPF compounds at a rate that beats almost every safe alternative available to an Indian saver, and it does so tax free after five years of continuous service. Money withdrawn at 32 to buy something is money that does not become a retirement corpus at 60.
Treat it as an emergency facility rather than a balance you can dip into. If you are withdrawing to cover a shortfall that keeps recurring, the withdrawal is a symptom and the emergency fund is the fix.
