GST Council meeting postponed to 7 October

The 57th meeting, set for 12 September, was moved because of the BRICS summit in New Delhi. Its agenda is expected to centre on business compliance rather than tax rates.

What this means for you

Nothing about the GST you pay changes this month because of the Council. If you have been holding off a purchase hoping for a GST cut before Diwali, there is no decision to wait for until at least 7 October, and the expected agenda is about business compliance rather than rates. If you run a small business, watch the outcome for changes to registration and input tax credit.

The GST Council, which brings together the Union Finance Minister and state finance ministers, was due to hold its 57th meeting in New Delhi on 12 September 2026. The GST Council Secretariat has rescheduled it to 7 October 2026, with the officers' meeting that prepares the ground moving to 5 and 6 October. The reason given is the BRICS Leaders' Summit, hosted in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September.

It will be the Council's first full meeting in over a year. The last one, in September 2025, moved most goods and services to two main rates of 5 and 18 percent and exempted individual life and health insurance premiums from GST.

Reporting on the expected agenda points to registration, input tax credit, refunds and other compliance matters for businesses, rather than another round of rate changes. The Council only publishes its decisions once it has met, so nothing is settled until 7 October.
