Bank charges you can actually get refunded in India
Minimum balance penalties, duplicate debits and fees for services you never asked for. What is reclaimable, what is not, and the exact escalation path.

Most people never check. A current account quietly shedding ₹200 a month to a minimum balance penalty loses ₹2,400 a year, and the bank is under no obligation to phone you about it. The first job is not complaining. It is reading a statement properly.
Start by naming the charge
Download twelve months of statements as a PDF or CSV and search for the debits banks use for fees. The wording differs between banks, but the families are consistent.
| What you will see | What it usually is | Typical size |
|---|---|---|
| AMB / MAB charges | Average monthly balance shortfall penalty | ₹100 to ₹600 a month, plus GST |
| SMS alert charges | Quarterly fee for transaction texts | ₹15 to ₹25 a quarter |
| Debit card AMC | Annual fee on the card, often on a card you never activated | ₹150 to ₹750 a year |
| ATM txn charge | Withdrawals past the free monthly limit | ₹21 plus GST per transaction |
| Non-home branch cash | Depositing or withdrawing cash outside your home branch | Varies, often ₹50 to ₹150 |
| Cheque return charge | A cheque or mandate that bounced | ₹200 to ₹500 |
What is genuinely reclaimable
- A duplicate debit. The same charge taken twice in a cycle is an error, and banks reverse these without argument once you point at the two line items.
- A charge for a service you never opted into. An insurance premium, a card variant upgrade or a value added pack you did not consent to in writing is reversible, and the bank must show your consent.
- A charge that contradicts the bank's own schedule of charges. Every bank publishes one. If they billed ₹600 where the schedule says ₹400, the difference is theirs to return.
- Charges applied while your account was in a category that exempts them. Basic savings accounts and salary accounts are usually exempt from minimum balance penalties, and banks do sometimes fail to reclassify an account after a salary credit stops.
- Penalties applied after you closed or downgraded the account, where the request was made in writing and acknowledged.
What is not, however unfair it feels
A minimum balance penalty you were told about when you opened the account is a charge you agreed to. So is an ATM fee past the free limit, and so is a cheque return charge on a cheque that actually bounced. You can still ask the bank to waive them as a goodwill gesture, and for a long standing customer that request often works. But it is a favour, not a right, and it is worth knowing the difference before you write.
The escalation path, in order
- Write to the branch or use the bank's online grievance form. Put it in writing even if you also phone. Quote the exact dates, amounts and narration text of each disputed debit, and say plainly what you want, which is a reversal of a specific rupee figure.
- Note the complaint reference number. Without it the next stage is much slower.
- Wait thirty days. This is not optional politeness, it is the precondition for escalating.
- If there is no reply, or the reply does not resolve it, file with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. It is free, it is online, and you do not need a lawyer.
The Ombudsman route exists precisely because individual customers cannot out argue a bank's process. It costs nothing to use, and the fact that a bank knows you can use it changes how the thirtieth day goes.
Stopping the leak for good
- Ask in writing whether your account qualifies for a basic savings variant with no minimum balance requirement. Many people are on a product they no longer need.
- Cancel the debit cards you do not use. Each one may carry its own annual fee.
- Set a calendar reminder to read one full statement every quarter. Fifteen minutes, four times a year, is the whole discipline.
What to do next
- Download the last twelve months of statements and search for the narration terms in the table above.
- Total what you were charged and split it into agreed and not agreed.
- Send one written complaint covering every disputed item at once rather than one per charge.
